A Guide to making secure but memorable passwords

Here is a simple way to making a secure but memorable password for every program and website you use:

Use three random letters, one memorable word and then three random numbers – It is important to note that to ensure your password stays memorable you only change the word part of your new password (which should also be a word relevant to the site or program you are using), here are a few examples;

jxtsell612 – for something like eBay or Gumtree.

jxtpics612 – for Dropbox

jxtfile612 – for Google Drive or Onedrive
This method ensures your password is strong and easily memorable as you only need to remember the word you associated with that site or program. If you would like to make your password even more secure you could change on of the letters to a capital letter and/or add a special character, so as an example i might use;

jxtPics612! – For dropbox (Change marked in red)

Now this password contains, lower case letters, upper case letters, special characters and numbers – Using all of these will ensure your password is highly secure and will meet the criteria of most sites and programs.

If you are going to use an upper case letter and a special character in your password it is important to keep the password consistent to keep it easily memorable so now the passwords would look like this;

Windows 8.1 aka Windows Blue

Microsoft have announced the return of the start button and an option to go straight to the desktop in a free Windows 8.1 update due later in 2013.
Microsoft are hoping to undo the trend of Windows 8 being a sales flop…much like Vista in 2007.

Xperia Arc vs Galaxy S2

andriod

Mobile phones have come a long way since we needed a briefcase-sized battery just to make a 30 second phone call.

Samsung and Sony’s latest phones look pretty similar on paper, but how do they compare in day to day use?

Firstly, the Galaxy S2 has a slightly bigger screen, 4.3 inch compared to the Sony’s 4.2 inch offering. The sony screen is slightly higher resolution, but not so much to make a lot of difference! Both have a very bright, vivid display, perfect for watching videos on the go, or surfing the internet. The Sony screen can actually appear to be larger, but this is due to the tiny amount of surrounding casing.

Unfortunately, this is pretty much the only area where the Sony competes with Samsungs excellent S2. The S2 has a longer battery life due to using an AMOLED display vs Sony’s LCD, a better, dual core CPU, and a gorilla glass screen which makes it very tough to damage.

Sony’s phone, although nicely designed, has a very plastic, almost cheap feel to it. The glass on the Xperia Arc is very prone to being scratched, so you will need a to use a protective cover with it. Fortunately, Sony does supply a plastic screen cover.

All in all, although both are very nice phones, given the choice, the Samsung is the one to go for.

The Massive Problem of E-Waste and WEEE

weee recycling

In a world where technological items are updated regularly and upgrades are constantly flooding the market, e-waste has become an increasing problem. Objects categorised as e-waste include computers, DVD players, televisions, washing machines, fridges, batteries, laptops and mobile phones. Approximately more than a million tonnes of equipment a year is discarded by domestic and commercial users in the UK alone because it is broken, obsolete or outdated.
Although recycling would seem the obvious way to deal with this waste many countries do not have the recycling expertise to handle this equipment as items such as these are generally made up of different material and substances; this makes them complicated to handle and dismantle. Many also contain toxic substances such a lead, bromine, cadmium, arsenic and mercury.
While, across the world, electrical and electronic waste (WEEE) may still terminate in Landfill, increasingly objects are ending their functional life on a beach in Africa or Asia, being dismantled by local people without proper safety equipment. Children are breaking down the equipment in an effort to find valuable substances such as iron, copper, silicone and nickel that they can sell. Gold can be extracted via dangerous methods from computer circuit boards which makes them a precious commodity. Copper can be removed from wires via a burning process that releases toxins which can cause chest and lung problems. Whilst these toxins become carcinogenic when they are released into the air, the mercury and lead found in e-waste items can also permeate the soil when the equipment is being disassembled thus being ingested by plants and entering the food chain. Despite the fact that dumping waste is in direct violation of international legislation, it is widely thought that it is transported to these places on the promise of being recycled or re-used.
In the hope of engendering recycling of materials, people in many places are seeking to introduce the crucial education for locals in uninjurious methods which can lead to the safe removal of the prized substances so noticeably depended upon for financial security. In New Zealand waste has been sent to accredited recycling companies in South Korea where accepted international processes are used to ensure the workers safety whilst recovering the valuable materials within a product. For an item to be adequately recycled the object must be dismantled into its various original components, such as circuit boards, metal frames, glass and plastics. Re-use is another option for equipment that has exceeded its usefulness in one situation, although it is only a matter of time before this also terminates on the burgeoning heap that is e-waste.
